أَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى يُكَذِّبُ بِٱلدِّينِ﴿١﴾
HAST THOU ever considered [the kind of man] who gives the lie to all moral law?1
ധാർമ്മിക നിയമങ്ങളെ തികച്ചും വ്യാജമാക്കുന്ന (തരത്തിലുള്ള മനുഷ്യനെ) നീ കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ടോ?
فَذَٰلِكَ ٱلَّذِى يَدُعُّ ٱلْيَتِيمَ﴿٢﴾
Behold, it is this [kind of man] that thrusts the orphan away,
നോക്കൂ, അനാഥയെ ആട്ടിയകറ്റുന്നത് അങ്ങനെയുള്ള (ഒരു മനുഷ്യൻ) തന്നെയാണ്,
وَلَا يَحُضُّ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلْمِسْكِينِ﴿٣﴾
and feels no urge2 to feed the needy.
അഗതിക്ക് ആഹാരം നൽകാൻ പ്രേരിപ്പിക്കാത്തവനുമാണ്.
فَوَيْلٌۭ لِّلْمُصَلِّينَ﴿٤﴾
Woe, then, unto those praying ones
എന്നാൽ, പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കുന്നവർക്ക് നാശം!
ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَن صَلَاتِهِمْ سَاهُونَ﴿٥﴾
whose hearts from their prayer are remote3 -
തങ്ങളുടെ പ്രാർത്ഥനയുടെ അന്തസ്സത്തയിൽ നിന്ന് മനസ്സുകൊണ്ട് അകന്നുനിൽക്കുന്നവർക്ക്,
ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ يُرَآءُونَ﴿٦﴾
those who want only to be seen and praised,
ആളുകളെ കാണിക്കാനും പ്രശംസ പിടിച്ചുപറ്റാനും മാത്രം ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നവർക്ക്,
وَيَمْنَعُونَ ٱلْمَاعُونَ﴿٧﴾
and, withal, deny all assistance [to their fellow-men]!4
കൂടാതെ, (തങ്ങളുടെ സഹജീവികൾക്ക്) എല്ലാവിധ സഹായങ്ങളും വിലക്കുന്നവർക്ക്!

- 1. I.e., who denies that there is any objective validity in religion as such and, thus, in the concept of moral law (which is one of the primary connotations of the term din - cf. note 3 on 109:6). Some commentators are of the opinion that in the above context din signifies "judgment", i.e., the Day of Judgment, and interpret this phrase as meaning "who calls the Day of Judgment a lie".

- 4. The term al-ma'un comprises the many small items needed for one's daily use, as well as the occasional acts of kindness consisting in helping out one's fellow-men with such items. In its wider sense, it denotes "aid" or "assistance" in any difficulty.
