وَٱلْمُرْسَلَٰتِ عُرْفًۭا﴿١﴾
CONSIDER these [messages,] sent forth in waves1
അലകളായി അയക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുള്ള (ഈ സന്ദേശങ്ങളെ) കുറിച്ച് ചിന്തിക്കുക,
فَٱلْعَٰصِفَٰتِ عَصْفًۭا﴿٢﴾
and then storming on with a tempest's force!
തുടർന്ന് കൊടുങ്കാറ്റിന്റെ ശക്തിയോടെ ആഞ്ഞടിക്കുന്നവയെയും!
وَٱلنَّٰشِرَٰتِ نَشْرًۭا﴿٣﴾
Consider these [messages] that spread [the truth] far and wide,
(സത്യത്തെ) എങ്ങും പടർത്തുന്ന ഈ (സന്ദേശങ്ങളെ) കുറിച്ച് ചിന്തിക്കുക,
فَٱلْفَٰرِقَٰتِ فَرْقًۭا﴿٤﴾
thus separating [right and wrong] with all clarity,2
അങ്ങനെ (ശരിയും തെറ്റും തമ്മിൽ) തികഞ്ഞ വ്യക്തതയോടെ വേർതിരിക്കുന്നവയെയും,
فَٱلْمُلْقِيَٰتِ ذِكْرًا﴿٥﴾
and then giving forth a reminder,
എന്നിട്ട് ഒരു ഓർമ്മപ്പെടുത്തൽ നൽകുന്നവയെയും കുറിച്ച്,
عُذْرًا أَوْ نُذْرًا﴿٦﴾
[promising] freedom from blame or [offering] a warning!3
കുറ്റവിമുക്തി (വാഗ്ദാനം ചെയ്യുന്നതായോ) അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ഒരു താക്കീത് (നൽകുന്നതായോ ഉള്ളത്)!
إِنَّمَا تُوعَدُونَ لَوَٰقِعٌۭ﴿٧﴾
BEHOLD, all that you are told to expect4 will surely come to pass.
തീർച്ചയായും, നിങ്ങളോട് വാഗ്ദാനം ചെയ്യപ്പെടുന്ന കാര്യങ്ങളെല്ലാം തന്നെ സംഭവിക്കുക തന്നെ ചെയ്യും.
فَإِذَا ٱلنُّجُومُ طُمِسَتْ﴿٨﴾
Thus, [it will come to pass] when the stars are effaced,
അങ്ങനെ, നക്ഷത്രങ്ങൾ പ്രഭമങ്ങി ഇല്ലാതാകുമ്പോൾ (ആ കാര്യം സംഭവിക്കുക തന്നെ ചെയ്യും),
وَإِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ فُرِجَتْ﴿٩﴾
and when the sky is rent asunder,
ആകാശം പിളരുമ്പോൾ,
وَإِذَا ٱلْجِبَالُ نُسِفَتْ﴿١٠﴾
and when the mountains are scattered like dust,
പർവ്വതങ്ങൾ ധൂളിയായി പറത്തപ്പെടുമ്പോൾ,
وَإِذَا ٱلرُّسُلُ أُقِّتَتْ﴿١١﴾
and when all the apostles are called together at a time appointed...5
ദൂതന്മാരെല്ലാം നിശ്ചിത സമയത്ത് ഒരുമിച്ചു കൂട്ടപ്പെടുമ്പോൾ...
لِأَىِّ يَوْمٍ أُجِّلَتْ﴿١٢﴾
For what day has the term [of all this] been set?
ഏതു നാളിലേക്കാണിതിന്റെ അവധി നിശ്ചയിക്കപ്പെട്ടത്?
لِيَوْمِ ٱلْفَصْلِ﴿١٣﴾
For the Day of Distinction [between the true and the false]!6
(സത്യവും അസത്യവും തമ്മിൽ) വേർതിരിക്കുന്ന ആ തീർപ്പുദിനത്തിലേക്ക്!
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا يَوْمُ ٱلْفَصْلِ﴿١٤﴾
And what could make thee conceive what that Day of Distinction will be?
ആ തീർപ്പുദിനം എന്താണെന്ന് നിനക്ക് മനസ്സിലാക്കിത്തരുന്നത് ഏത് കാര്യമാണ്?
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ﴿١٥﴾
Woe on that Day unto those who give the lie to the truth!
സത്യത്തെ നിഷേധിച്ചു തള്ളിയവർക്ക് അന്നാളില് വലിയ നാശം!
أَلَمْ نُهْلِكِ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ﴿١٦﴾
Did We not destroy [so many of] those [sinners] of olden days?
പൂർവ്വികരായ (ആ പാപികളിൽ പലരെയും) നാം നശിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടില്ലേ?
ثُمَّ نُتْبِعُهُمُ ٱلْءَاخِرِينَ﴿١٧﴾
And We shall let them be followed by those of later times:7
പിന്നീട് വരുന്നവരെയും അവരുടെ പിന്നാലെ നാം അങ്ങോട്ട് തന്നെ ചേര്ക്കും.
كَذَٰلِكَ نَفْعَلُ بِٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ﴿١٨﴾
[for] thus do We deal with such as are lost in sin.
(കാരണം) പാപത്തിൽ മുഴുകിയവരോട് ഇതാണ് നാം ചെയ്യുക.
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ﴿١٩﴾
Woe on that Day unto those who give the lie to the truth!
സത്യത്തെ നിഷേധിച്ചു തള്ളിയവർക്ക് ആ നാളിൽ വലിയ നാശം!
أَلَمْ نَخْلُقكُّم مِّن مَّآءٍۢ مَّهِينٍۢ﴿٢٠﴾
Did We not create you out of a humble fluid
നിസ്സാരമായ ഒരു ദ്രാവകത്തിൽ നിന്നല്ലേ നാം നിങ്ങളെ സൃഷ്ടിച്ചത്?
فَجَعَلْنَٰهُ فِى قَرَارٍۢ مَّكِينٍ﴿٢١﴾
which We then let remain in [the womb's] firm keeping
എന്നിട്ട് അതിനെ സുരക്ഷിതമായ ഒരു സ്ഥാനത്ത് (ഗർഭപാത്രത്തിൽ) നാം സൂക്ഷിച്ചു,
إِلَىٰ قَدَرٍۢ مَّعْلُومٍۢ﴿٢٢﴾
for a term pre-ordained?
മുൻകൂട്ടി നിശ്ചയിക്കപ്പെട്ട ഒരു കാലാവധി വരെ.
فَقَدَرْنَا فَنِعْمَ ٱلْقَٰدِرُونَ﴿٢٣﴾
Thus have We determined [the nature of man's creation]: and excellent indeed is Our power to determine [what is to be]!8
അപ്രകാരം നാം അത് നിശ്ചയിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു (മനുഷ്യന്റെ സൃഷ്ടിയുടെ സ്വഭാവം): (എന്തും) നിശ്ചയിക്കാൻ കഴിവുള്ളവരിൽ ഏറ്റവും ഉത്തമൻ നാം തന്നെയാണ്!
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ﴿٢٤﴾
Woe, on that Day unto those who give the lie to the truth!
സത്യത്തെ നിഷേധിച്ചു തള്ളിയവർക്ക് ആ നാളിൽ വലിയ നാശം!
أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ ٱلْأَرْضَ كِفَاتًا﴿٢٥﴾
Have We not caused the earth to hold within itself
ഭൂമിയെ നാം, ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നവരെയും മരിച്ചവരെയും ഒന്നിച്ച് ഉള്ക്കൊള്ളുന്നതാക്കിയിട്ടില്ലയോ?
أَحْيَآءًۭ وَأَمْوَٰتًۭا﴿٢٦﴾
the living and the dead?9
ഭൂമിയെ നാം, ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നവരെയും മരിച്ചവരെയും ഒന്നിച്ച് ഉള്ക്കൊള്ളുന്നതാക്കിയിട്ടില്ലയോ?
وَجَعَلْنَا فِيهَا رَوَٰسِىَ شَٰمِخَٰتٍۢ وَأَسْقَيْنَٰكُم مَّآءًۭ فُرَاتًۭا﴿٢٧﴾
and have We not set on it proud, firm mountains, and given you sweet water to drink?10
അതിൽ നാം തലയുയർത്തി നിൽക്കുന്ന ദൃഢമായ പർവ്വതങ്ങൾ സ്ഥാപിക്കുകയും, നിങ്ങൾക്ക് കുടിക്കാൻ മധുരമുള്ള വെള്ളം നൽകുകയും ചെയ്തില്ലേ?
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ﴿٢٨﴾
Woe on that Day unto those who give the lie to the truth!
സത്യത്തെ നിഷേധിച്ചു തള്ളിയവർക്ക് ആ നാളിൽ വലിയ നാശം!
ٱنطَلِقُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰ مَا كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ﴿٢٩﴾
GO ON towards that [resurrection] which you were wont to call a lie!
നിങ്ങൾ ഏതൊന്നിനെയാണോ വ്യാജമെന്ന് വിളിച്ചിരുന്നത്, ആ (പുനരുത്ഥാനത്തിലേക്ക്) നിങ്ങൾ നടന്നുപോവുക!
ٱنطَلِقُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰ ظِلٍّۢ ذِى ثَلَٰثِ شُعَبٍۢ﴿٣٠﴾
Go on towards the threefold shadow11
മൂന്ന് ശാഖകളുള്ള ആ നിഴലിലേക്ക് നിങ്ങൾ നീങ്ങുക;
لَّا ظَلِيلٍۢ وَلَا يُغْنِى مِنَ ٱللَّهَبِ﴿٣١﴾
that will offer no [cooling] shade and will be of no avail against the flame
അത് നിങ്ങൾക്ക് (കുളിരേകുന്ന) യാതൊരുവിധ തണലും നൽകില്ല, ആ നരകാഗ്നിയുടെ ജ്വാലയിൽ നിന്ന് യാതൊരു സംരക്ഷണവുമേകില്ല.
إِنَّهَا تَرْمِى بِشَرَرٍۢ كَٱلْقَصْرِ﴿٣٢﴾
which behold!- will throw up sparks like [burning] logs,
തീർച്ചയായും അത് (കത്തുന്ന) വലിയ വിറകുകഷ്ണങ്ങൾ പോലെയുള്ള തീപ്പൊരികൾ മുകളിലേക്ക് തെറിപ്പിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കും,
كَأَنَّهُۥ جِمَٰلَتٌۭ صُفْرٌۭ﴿٣٣﴾
like giant fiery ropes!12
കൂറ്റൻ വടങ്ങൾ പോലെയുള്ള മഞ്ഞനിറത്തിലുള്ള തീപ്പൊരികൾ!
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ﴿٣٤﴾
Woe on that Day unto those who give the lie to the truth
സത്യത്തെ നിഷേധിച്ചു തള്ളിയവർക്ക് ആ നാളിൽ വലിയ നാശം!
هَٰذَا يَوْمُ لَا يَنطِقُونَ﴿٣٥﴾
that Day on which they will not [be able to] utter a word,
അവർക്ക് ഒരു വാക്ക് പോലും ഉച്ചരിക്കാൻ (കഴിയാത്ത) നാളാണത്,
وَلَا يُؤْذَنُ لَهُمْ فَيَعْتَذِرُونَ﴿٣٦﴾
nor be allowed to proffer excuses!
ഒഴികഴിവുകൾ ബോധിപ്പിക്കാൻ അവർക്ക് അനുവാദം നൽകപ്പെടുകയുമില്ല.
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ﴿٣٧﴾
Woe on that Day unto those who give the lie to the truth
സത്യത്തെ നിഷേധിച്ചു തള്ളിയവർക്ക് ആ നാളിൽ വലിയ നാശം!
هَٰذَا يَوْمُ ٱلْفَصْلِ ۖ جَمَعْنَٰكُمْ وَٱلْأَوَّلِينَ﴿٣٨﴾
that Day of Distinction [between the true and the false, when they will be told]: "We have brought you together with those [sinners] of olden times;
(സത്യവും അസത്യവും തമ്മിൽ) വേർതിരിക്കുന്ന ആ തീർപ്പുദിനമാണത്, (അന്ന് അവരോട് പറയപ്പെടും): "നിങ്ങളെയും പൂർവ്വികരായ ആ (പാപികളെയും) നാം ഒരുമിച്ചു കൂട്ടിയിരിക്കുന്നു;
فَإِن كَانَ لَكُمْ كَيْدٌۭ فَكِيدُونِ﴿٣٩﴾
and if you [think that you] have a subterfuge left, try to outwit Me!"
ഇനി നിങ്ങൾക്ക് പ്രയോഗിക്കാൻ തന്ത്രങ്ങളെന്തെങ്കിലും ബാക്കിയുണ്ടെന്ന് (നിങ്ങൾ കരുതുന്നുവെങ്കിൽ), എന്നെ തോൽപ്പിക്കാൻ അതൊന്ന് നടത്തിനോക്കുവിന്!"
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ﴿٤٠﴾
Woe on that Day unto those who give the lie to the truth!
സത്യത്തെ നിഷേധിച്ചു തള്ളിയവർക്ക് അന്നാളില്, വലിയ നാശം!
إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى ظِلَٰلٍۢ وَعُيُونٍۢ﴿٤١﴾
[AS AGAINST this,] behold, the God-conscious shall dwell amidst [cooling] shades and springs,
(എന്നാൽ ഇതിന് വിപരീതമായി,) ദൈവഭയമുള്ളവർ തണലുകളിലും ഉറവകളിലും ആയിരിക്കും വസിക്കുന്നത്,
وَفَوَٰكِهَ مِمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ﴿٤٢﴾
and [partake of] whatever fruit they may desire;
അവർ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്ന തരം പഴവർഗ്ഗങ്ങൾ (ഭക്ഷിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യാം);"
كُلُوا۟ وَٱشْرَبُوا۟ هَنِيٓـًٔۢا بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ﴿٤٣﴾
[and they will be told:] "Eat and drink in good cheer in return for what you did [in life]!"13
(അവരോട് പറയപ്പെടും:) "(ജീവിതത്തിൽ) നിങ്ങൾ ചെയ്ത സൽകര്മങ്ങള്ക്ക് പ്രതിഫലമായി നിങ്ങൾ സന്തോഷത്തോടെ തിന്നുകയും കുടിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുക!”
إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ﴿٤٤﴾
Thus, behold, do We reward the doers of good;
ഇപ്രകാരമാണ് നന്മ ചെയ്യുന്നവർക്ക് നാം പ്രതിഫലം നൽകുന്നത്;
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ﴿٤٥﴾
[but] woe on that Day unto those who give the lie to the truth!
(എന്നാൽ) സത്യത്തെ നിഷേധിച്ചു തള്ളിയവർക്ക് അന്നാളില് വലിയ നാശം!
كُلُوا۟ وَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ قَلِيلًا إِنَّكُم مُّجْرِمُونَ﴿٤٦﴾
EAT [your fill] and enjoy your life for a little while, O you who are lost in sin!14
പാപത്തിൽ മുഴുകിയവരേ, നിങ്ങൾ കുറച്ചുകാലം (വയറുനിറയെ) തിന്നുകയും ജീവിതം ആസ്വദിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തുകൊള്ളൂ!
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ﴿٤٧﴾
[But] woe on that Day unto those who give the lie to the truth,
(പക്ഷേ)സത്യത്തെ നിഷേധിച്ചു തള്ളിയവർക്ക് അന്നാളില് വലിയ നാശം!
وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ ٱرْكَعُوا۟ لَا يَرْكَعُونَ﴿٤٨﴾
and when they are told, "Bow down [before God]", do not bow down:
അവരോട് "(ദൈവത്തിന് മുന്നിൽ) തലകുനിക്കൂ" എന്ന് പറയപ്പെടുമ്പോൾ അവർ തലകുനിക്കാറില്ല:
وَيْلٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ﴿٤٩﴾
woe on that Day unto those who give the to the truth!
സത്യത്തെ നിഷേധിച്ചു തള്ളിയവർക്ക് അന്നാളില് വലിയ നാശം!
فَبِأَىِّ حَدِيثٍۭ بَعْدَهُۥ يُؤْمِنُونَ﴿٥٠﴾
In what other tiding, then, will they, after this, believe?
ഇനി ഇതിന് ശേഷം ഏത് സന്ദേശത്തിലാണ് അവർ വിശ്വസിക്കാൻ പോകുന്നത്?"

- 8. The process of man's coming into being (illustrated, for instance, in 23:12-14) clearly point to God's creative activity and, hence, to His existence. Consequently, lack of gratitude on man's part amounts to what the Qur'an describes as "giving the lie to the truth".

This refers not merely to the fact that the earth is an abode for living and dead human beings and animals, but is also an allusion to the God-willed, cyclic recurrence of birth, growth, decay and death in all organic creation - and thus an evidence of the existence of the Creator who "brings forth the living out of that which is dead, and brings forth the dead out of that which is alive (3:27, 6:95, 10:31 and 30:19).

Tabari, Baghawi, Razi, Ibn Kathir; also Bukhari, Kitab at-Tafsir). Moreover, our observation of the trajectory of shooting stars fully justifies the rendering "giant fiery ropes". Similarly, my rendering of qasr, in this context, as "[burning] logs" - instead of the conventional (and utterly meaningless) "castles", "palaces", etc. - goes back to all of the above-mentioned authorities.
